A solar eclipse occurs today at 9:58am EST, with the New Moon obscuring the light from the Sun and casting its shadow on Earth. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon’s path travels between the Sun and Earth and essentially blocks the light coming from the Sun. Additionally, the Moon lines up with the South Node during today’s solar eclipse. The Moon’s nodes are imaginary points at which the Moon’s orbit intersects with the plane of the ecliptic. In order for a solar eclipse to take place, the New Moon and the Sun must be conjunct one of the lunar nodes. This is why a solar eclipse does not occur every New Moon—there must be a node nearby for the Sun, Moon and Earth to perfectly line up. This alignment, known as eclipse season, happens approximately twice a year and lasts for just over 30 days (34.5 days, to be more exact). Thus, the energetic effects of a solar eclipse can last for over a month, even though the solar eclipse proper lasts a mere 7:30 minutes max.
Sooo...what does this mean? With the solar eclipse taking place at about 8° Pisces, and Neptune lingering dangerously close to both the Sun and Moon, this eclipse is bound to unleash our creative and escapist potential. When the Sun’s rays are obscured and otherwise “filtered” by the Moon, our feminine energy acts as a dream catcher of sorts in an attempt to capture and blend our left-brain (Sun) and right-brain (Moon) on an internal level. We are more prone to consider and confront things from an emotional standpoint instead of a rational one. So while creativity may be heightened, it will not necessarily align with the day to day reality in which we live. This will be exacerbated by Neptune’s close hold on both the Sun and the Moon, blurring the facts and general reality to the point of confusion at times. Neptune is the great embellisher of the zodiac, sometimes in the form of art and accessorizing (Neptune is a great bedazzler--more is more!), other times in the form of bending the truth to justify its questionable actions. Neptune lacks understanding of the point at which the ego defines an individual against a greater whole. This can add to its sometimes humanitarian nature, but can also fuel its proneness for covert action and vicarious experience due to a weak understanding of self.
Modern astrologers associate Neptune as the ruling planet of Pisces, which would indicate that its current placement at 11°35’ Pisces in the Cancer decan gives it lots of encouragement and leeway to take action (cardinal decan). While I do not subscribe to modern astrology and therefore use Jupiter as the traditional ruler of Pisces, there’s no denying that Neptune in its current placement has an intense effect on the solar eclipse. It projects denial of reality and lack of rules (Neptune thrives on the idea of unlimited possibilities) onto both the left- and right-brain, offering an enticing path forward, but one that might be fraught with booby traps or dead-ends. Let’s face it—Neptune is not known for its planning—it prefers to go with the flow. Without the Sun’s rays to brightly illuminate this path, we rely on the darkness of the New Moon to guide us instinctively.
With the South Node in the mix at 3° Pisces, we’re reminded during this eclipse of what our purpose is and where we’re destined to serve. If the North Node represents what we “take in” and experience this lifetime, the South Node marks where we’re responsible for disseminating those experiences. This solar eclipse, with Mercury conjunct the South Node at 1° Pisces, may have us feeling responsible for communicating the visions and realizations that we come to during the next month or so. The challenge will be to decipher what is real and worthwhile, and what is merely a shadow of the truth.
Mars conjunct Uranus today in Aries adds to this feeling of getting off our asses to do something visionary and meaningful, as it sets off a tight opposition to Jupiter in Libra which can magnify our spiritual endeavors and desire for assimilating abstract higher thought into our daily reality. This conjunction and opposition between Mars, Uranus, and Jupiter in cardinal signs occurring at the same time as the solar eclipse is bound to motivate people both spiritually and politically. Expect these motivations to be intense and inextricably linked, lasting for approximately the next month. Pisces, the sign in which the eclipse is taking place, can be a safe haven for like-minded individuals, but can also be an area in which one claims expertise that they may not necessarily have—keep this in mind as you identify how the energy of this solar eclipse is affecting you personally and which bandwagons you feel called to join.
Sunday, January 29th
The Moon enters Pisces today at 11:10am EST, and comfort can be found in daydream, fantasy, and recession into the self through sleep, meditation, or even unsavory behaviors such as drug use. Internal energy may be lowered, as the Moon in Pisces has very little boundaries, so be on alert for emotional vampires or attacks on your emotions. Mercury and Pluto also meet up later today at 3:21pm EST for the only time in 2017, which is likely to bring up deep issues, particularly related to communication. Combined with the Moon in Pisces, the possibility of lashing out at others (whether in real life or only in your mind) is heightened. Leverage these two energies by being aware of boundaries and how you respond people and situations who try to cross them.
Monday, January 30th
The Moon in Pisces meets up with Neptune in Pisces at 6:17am EST, which some consider the modern ruler of Pisces, so perception is certainly reality today. Remember that Pisces and Neptune like to break down boundaries and cloud our view, so pay close attention to what’s actually real and what just feels real today. It’s likely you’ll feel all the feels today.
Tuesday, January 31st
The Moon in Pisces is confronted by Saturn in Sagittarius today at 7:11am EST, challenging us to determine whether the dreaming of the past few days is actually something worth pursuing. If it is, you better have a plan in place, because winging it is not likely to work in your favor. Luckily, the Moon enters Aries later in the day at 4:46pm EST which motivates us to act, albeit impulsively, on any potential plans.
Wednesday, February 1st
The Moon in Aries is sextile the Sun in Aquarius today at 3:50pm EST, which will want us acting on what we sense should be done and what we know to be a bigger truth. Inspiration for serving a larger cause or the bigger picture flows naturally today.
Thursday, February 2nd
The Moon in Aries squares Mercury in Capricorn at 8:52am EST and then opposes Jupiter in Libra at 9:01am EST, which challenges us to be realistic about what can actually be accomplished, not just for ourselves, but in doing what is right for others as well. Don’t blow things out of proportion if you don’t get your way today or if others don’t agree with your point of view. The Moon moves into Taurus later today at 8:50pm EST bringing us more stability and rationality.
Friday, February 3rd
Venus enters Aries today at 10:51am EST where she is quite uncomfortable. You may feel the need to protect your emotions during this transit, and be aware of how you might criticize yourself. It might not be as serious as it seems. Unfortunately, Venus will go retrograde in March, so she will spend quite a bit of time in Aries over the next few months. While relationships might not pan out, the energy for getting art and self-expression out into the world is ripe for the picking.
Saturday, February 4th
The Moon enters Gemini late today at 11:44pm EST. Enjoy this sociable transit if you plan to go out tonight, but don’t be surprised if you’re tossing and turning tonight with a mind that just won’t quit.
Remember that while these transits will be happening real-time, they are also moving through your natal chart an impacting your native planetary placements. To learn how these transits might impact you specifically, contact me for a natal chart reading!
Sunday, January 22
The Moon enters Sagittarius today at 5:45am EST and is at her most optimistic in this Jupiter-ruled sign. The Moon in Sagittarius has us ready to go out and try something new, invest time into learning a new skill, or discussing deep topics. The Moon in this sign can be pulled toward excess, as Jupiter loves to live large, so be aware if you feel a little over the top.
Monday, January 23
The Moon in Sag squares up with Neptune in Pisces at 2:37am EST, and quite frankly has us wanting to cut through the crap to get to the good stuff. While Jupiter rules both Sagittarius and Pisces (traditionally), Neptune can make things a little blurry. Sagittarius wills us to consider what can be learned from situations in which things may not appear as they are.
Tuesday, January 24
Moon in Sagittarius squares Chiron in Pisces today at 1:49am EST might have you confronting something from your past or old way of being. Acknowledge, learn, and move on. The Moon later enters Capricorn at 5:43pm EST, urging you to take charge of this past hurt.
Wednesday, January 25
Venus in Pisces moves over Chiron in Pisces at 1:49am EST and is followed by the Moon in Capricorn joining forces with Mercury in Capricorn at 6:58pm EST. These combined transits are telling us to nurture ourselves from the confrontation of past hurt from yesterday in order for thoughts and feelings to align so that they way forward is clear. This will involve taking responsibility for your thought patterns and dropping those that don’t serve you.
Thursday, January 26
Moon in Capricorn conjunct Pluto in Capricorn at 4:22am EST and square Uranus in Aries at 10:18am EST is calling us to take charge of our personal power today and actually DO something. This is a great combo for business and making it happen up until 2:18am EST on the 27th when the Moon goes void of course.
Friday, January 27
Venus in Pisces squares Saturn in Sagittarius today at 12:50pm EST. There may be a challenge to authority and relationships today -- a juxtaposition between acting from the heart and taking care of things from what you know to be true. The Moon entering Aquarius today at 3:37am EST may help discern this dilemma from a bird’s eye view. Think of the big picture when making any decisions today.
Saturday, January 28
Mars enters Aries at 12:39am EST where it works its best and quickest. New projects might be on the forefront, and intense motivation will be available if we recognize it. Interaction and reaction will be on high alert today. Decide how you best want to use your abundance of energy.
The week starts with a lot of Pisces energy from Sunday, January 1st through Tuesday the 3rd. New year’s day brings Mars conjunct Neptune in Pisces. Mars’s fiery nature is dampened a bit by Neptune’s lack of clarity, possibly resulting in low energy and motivation. Pisces energy picks up some on the 2nd with the Moon entering Pisces at 11:47am EST, giving us reason to escape into fantasies and daydreams that we’ve been conjuring. Venus moves into Pisces on the 3rd at 2:47am EST. Venus is exalted here and entertains Pisces’s desire for dreaming and creativity. Connection to others will be high at this time, and intuition, specifically feelings toward and about others, is relatively strong.
Direction changes on Wednesday, January 4th with Mercury entering Sagittarius at 9:17am EST. Mercury is in detriment here, so watch your words and communication! Planets in detriment are strong, but can suffer consequences of their own doing. Mercury in Sagittarius loves to run its mouth, so be conscious that what you’re communicating is for a greater purpose and not idle chatter. Mercury is square the Moon in Pisces, so speaking from the heart might be instinctual but maybe not the best choice--do not let your emotions get the best of your communication!
The Moon meets up with Uranus in Aries at 11:15pm EST on Thursday, January 5th. This aspect is one of great independence and motivation. Motivation may be high, but follow-through is another story. The good news is that the Moon enters Taurus on Friday, January 6th at 3:18pm EST. The Moon is exalted in Taurus, and the erratic energy of the Moon in Aries is now a little calmer and makes you more inclined to stick with what you may have started.
Saturday, January 7th has the Sun meeting up with Pluto in Capricorn at 1:45am EST. All systems are go with this aspect which combines personal power with transformative intensity. You may feel very driven to accomplish something and will not stand for distractions or liabilities, which may result in some harshness or disregard if not managed appropriately. Flashes of brilliance and imagination in new ways may occur. In Capricorn, this conjunction lends itself to business and organization--pay attention to new ideas or opportunities for change that come to you at this time.
While these transits will be happening real-time, they are also moving through your natal chart an impacting your native planetary placements and energtic makeup. To learn how these transits might impact you specifically, contact me for a natal chart reading!
Mars will also be conjunct Venus (already in its dignity in Libra) upon entering Libra, so the next week or so should have you feeling extra amorous and romantic, especially when there’s music, mood lighting, and beautiful scenery or people involved. Our meaningful relationships with others will be in full focus, romantic or otherwise; however, try not to be too demanding of your loved ones or neglect those on the periphery of your circle. This may be a good time to try to mend broken relationships or give gifts as expressions of love. Enjoy the energies of this conjunct and don’t be afraid to flirt, show off, and dress to impress! Your high self-esteem should have you feeling yourself and you'll seem absolutely charming!
